4R.E.A.L. 101 (Real Employment Achievement Learning)

  • La Cuesta High School (November 2007)
  • New Friendship Baptist Church (website)

The 4REAL project is:

A group of four (4) real steps designed (by youth) to lead their peers through an actual employment achievement process of choosing a job and then removing the barriers to getting hired.

  1. Step One - Presentation! How we present ourselves when looking for a job makes a big difference.
  2. Step Two - Details! Students learn about cover letters (what they are, how and when to use them), resumes (key elements) and a full application workshop at the end.
  3. Step Three - Self Marketing! Interviewing skills, dress, body language and the "future question" (Where do you see yourself in five years?). All interviews are held in the classroom so other students can observe.
  4. Step Four - Training! Students learn to train other students. Students learn how to help each other, their friends and family outside of school.

Nearly 60-80 students take part in 4REAL every school year and four are chosen (based on attendance, class participation and recommendations of their teachers) to work for 4REAL over the summer. During the summer these four students help evaluate 4REAL, update and/or redesign our "Employee Manual" and make decisions about how 4REAL should run for the next year. These students will also become the initial student trainers in the coming school year.

Real students doing real jobs and helping other students, youth and their community. Small stipends are available to each program participant. The cost of this project is less than $500 per student per year. We think this is the best step-by-step program to make a real-life connection between what we learn and how to use what we learn. -- The Youth of ySTRIVE.
